Metal Ceilings: Installation Guide
Inspect and count the contents of
each crate to make sure all necessary pieces have been delivered.
Clean the metal sheets with denatured alcohol and allow them
to dry before installation.
A) Nail furring strips
to the ceiling around the perimeter of the room, using 3" nails or larger. (Plywood may be used as an alternative to using
furring strips). Hit nails only 1 /2 way in to allow for shimming
and leveling. The cornice will be nailed to these strips so
they should be placed as far away from the wall as the cornice
will project.
B) Find the center of the
ceiling and snap a chalk line at a right angle to the ceiling
beams; this insures that the furring will be nailed into the
beams. Now snap a second chalk line next to the center line,
half the width of the furring strip youre using. For example,
if youre using 2" furring, your second line would
be 1 " from the center line. Your first strip of furring
should be nailed up with one edge on the second line and covering
the center line (center line bisects the strip). Using the edges
of the first strip as the starting point, measure out 12"
for your next chalk line. Nail up the next piece of furring
with the outer edge against the chalk line; this will make your
furring 12" on center. Follow this procedure until all
furring strips have been nailed in place. Remember not to hit
nails all the way in. Take notice of shims.
C) The metal sheets are
2x 8 and 2x 4 and should be placed so
the long side is on the furring you have just completed. You
will need additional nails on the ends; so nail up short cross
pieces of furring 8 or 4 on center. If the furring
needs to be leveled, install shims (thin pieces of wood) between
it and the ceiling.
D) Start installing the
metal sheets at the furthest corner from the entrance to the
room. The metal is sharp - take caution. To keep the sheet straight,
support it with a piece of furring held on edge; we suggest
you have a helper to make it easier. Snap a chalk line along
the center of the first piece of furring that is not at the
wall (the walls may not be square). Line up the metal sheet
with the chalk line and nail it to the furring with 1-¼"
cone head nails (see Price & Order sheet). The sheets have
small dimples along the edges called beads. You line up the
sheets by overlapping these beads (like a ball and socket).
Nail the sheets on the bead every 6". The exception to
this is when you are joining sheets; use a flat head nail to
one side of the bead to allow the overlapping sheet to be nailed
on the bead. Nail down the center length of the sheet every
12" before nailing the edges.
To seal the overlapping seams, use the head end of a 3"
nail, tapping gently. This is called caulking. Any cutting required
can be done with metal shears (see
Price & Order sheet).
E)Nail the cornice into
the furring strips around the perimeter of the ceiling. The
cornice is nailed every 6" into the ceiling and into the
studs at the bottom of the cornice.
To Join the cornices at the corners, miter or cope them like
wood.
To get a tight fit snip the edge of one side with a series of
cuts 1/8" deep every 1/8". This edge is then bent
in or out depending on whether it is for an outside corner or
an inside one.
F) Caulk the edges of the
cornice, seams, and miters with the head of a nail in the same
manner as the ceiling.
G) The metal must be painted with oil
base paint*. If you want to retain the original silvery tin color you must use
clear lacquer or oil base polyurethane*. Thats all there is to it. Enjoy your new
ceiling!
